Some families are emotionally fused, energetically intertwined. This occurs where there's been trauma. For example, a sick child can to lead to parents becoming over protective. Or a family can go through collective trauma living in poverty or experiencing violence.

Trauma can lead to family members becoming unusually close. It's initially a protective function. However, it becomes difficult as we grow up and need to have boundaries in place in our adult relationships.

When a healthy emotional boundary is in place, you're able to recognise other's emotions and know that they are not your own. You can support and empathise other's, but allow them space to solve their own problems.
